UAE Aligns Indian School Calendar with National Education Framework

Major shift to take effect in 2026, ending decades-long practice of April-March academic year for Indian curriculum institutions.

DUBAI: In a landmark decision that will reshape academic scheduling for thousands of students, Indian curriculum schools across the UAE will transition to the Ministry of Education’s unified calendar beginning April 2026, effectively concluding their traditional April-March academic cycle that has defined Indian education in the Emirates for decades.

The move synchronizes one of the UAE’s largest educational sectors with the national academic framework, creating uniformity across the country’s diverse international school landscape. The delayed implementation until 2026 provides schools ample time to redesign academic schedules and prepare stakeholders for this significant operational change.

    Strategic Transition Planning Underway

Education leaders have initiated comprehensive planning to ensure academic continuity while adapting to the new calendar structure.

“Successful alignment will rely on meticulous preparation and stakeholder engagement,” stated Seema Umar, Principal of Dubai’s Dewvale School. Her institution is developing adjusted curriculum pacing, assessment timelines, and operational routines while maintaining academic standards through what she describes as a “structured transition plan.”

At Global Indian International School Dubai, Principal Anita Singh is implementing a “three-pronged strategy” focused on curriculum alignment, stakeholder communication, and student wellbeing. “We’re prioritizing minimal disruption through careful scheduling that maintains board examination readiness while adapting to the new framework,” Singh explained.

    Current Academic Year Unaffected

Nargish Khambatta, Principal of GEMS Modern Academy, clarified that the traditional schedule remains in effect until April 2026. “Our current academic structure and December operational patterns will continue unchanged,” she confirmed, noting that the extended timeline allows for thorough preparation.

The additional lead time enables schools to redesign their academic calendars while preserving the crucial December period for board examination preparation and ensuring compliance with the mandatory 182 instructional days.

Education authorities anticipate the unified calendar will streamline administrative processes and create greater cohesion across the UAE’s diverse educational landscape, while maintaining the academic excellence that characterizes Indian curriculum schools in the country.
