The “Just Mission 2025” exercises, announced by the PLA Eastern Theatre Command, are focused on combat readiness and controlling key maritime areas, escalating regional tensions.
BEIJING — China announced Monday that it will conduct large-scale live-fire military exercises around Taiwan, establishing five restricted zones for sea and air operations in a significant escalation of military pressure on the island.
State news agency Xinhua reported that the drills, named “Just Mission 2025,” are scheduled for Tuesday and will involve naval and air force units. A spokesperson for the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Eastern Theatre Command said the exercises focus on combat readiness and “controlling key ports and other areas.”
An official graphic released by Chinese authorities delineated five distinct zones that encircle Taiwan, indicating areas where live ammunition will be used and civilian transit will be prohibited. Such drills are widely interpreted as a demonstration of China’s capability to impose a blockade or assert dominance over the Taiwan Strait.
The announcement follows a consistent pattern of increased PLA activity in the region, often framed by Beijing as a necessary response to what it calls “separatist activities” and foreign interference. China claims Taiwan as part of its territory and has not ruled out the use of force to achieve unification.
The exercises are expected to heighten regional security concerns and likely disrupt international shipping and flight routes in the vicinity.
