The Duffer Brothers announce a project with new characters and mythology, set to answer lingering questions without returning to Hawkins.
The story of Hawkins may have concluded, but the Stranger Things universe is officially expanding. In a new interview, series creators Matt and Ross Duffer confirmed that a spin-off series is in active development, promising a “clean slate” with “completely new characters, new town, new world, new mythology.”
Speaking to Variary, the brothers clarified that while the new series will exist within the same narrative universe, it will not be a direct sequel or a deep dive into the original characters’ futures. Instead, it aims to explore fresh stories while addressing some unresolved mysteries from the flagship show.
“The spin-off is going to delve into that and explain that, and you’re going to understand it,” said Matt Duffer, hinting that it may explore origins like that of the Mind Flayer. “But it’s a completely different mythology. It’s not a deep exploration of the Mind Flayer or anything like that. It’s very fresh and very new, but yes, it will answer some of the loose threads that are remaining.”
Ross Duffer added that work on the series will resume shortly, emphasizing their enthusiasm for the new creative direction. “We’re actually really excited, and it’s very exciting to work with a clean slate,” he said.
The announcement comes just after the release of the fifth and final season of Stranger Things, which debuted in three volumes between November and December 2024, culminating in a two-hour and eight-minute series finale—the longest episode in the show’s history.
Netflix has not yet announced a title, casting, or release window for the spin-off, but the Duffer Brothers’ confirmation sets the stage for the next chapter in one of the streamer’s most enduring and popular franchises.
