The dual recall addresses critical defects in throttle body gears and engine bearings that could lead to sudden power loss or fire, according to safety regulators.
WASHINGTON – Nissan is issuing a major safety recall affecting 642,698 Rogue SUVs in the United States, tackling two separate mechanical defects that could lead to dangerous outcomes, including engine fires and a sudden loss of drive power.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced the recalls on Thursday, outlining two distinct issues impacting the popular compact SUV.
- Throttle Body Failure: The first recall involves 318,781 vehicles equipped with throttle bodies that may have broken gears. If the gears fail, the throttle valve may not operate correctly, potentially causing the engine to stall unexpectedly and resulting in a loss of drive power.
- Engine Bearing Failure: The second, larger recall covers 323,917 Rogues with potential engine bearing damage. According to the NHTSA, this defect poses a serious fire risk, as it can cause the engine to seize and discharge hot oil onto hot engine surfaces. This scenario not only increases the risk of a fire but can also lead to a sudden loss of power while driving.
What Nissan Will Do
To address both safety concerns, Nissan dealers will reprogram the engine-control software as a primary remedy. If technicians find that components have already been damaged, they will replace the necessary parts free of charge.
Nissan has not yet released a specific notification schedule, but affected owners are encouraged to check the NHTSA website or Nissan’s official recall portal in the coming weeks to see if their vehicle is included.
