Curfew Enforced in Homs After Murders Feared to Stoke Sectarian Unrest

Security forces flood southern neighborhoods as the killing of a couple, accompanied by sectarian graffiti, prompts fears of a deliberate plot to destabilize the community.

HOMS, Syria – Syrian authorities have deployed heavy security and declared a curfew in parts of Homs, seeking to contain the fallout from the murder of a couple in the town of Zaidal—a crime investigators suspect was designed to provoke sectarian conflict.

The bodies of the man and his wife were discovered in their home earlier today. The incident took a more sinister turn with the discovery of sectarian slogans at the crime scene, immediately raising alarms that the killings were a calculated act to ignite violence between communities.

In response, internal security forces have been placed on high alert, with patrols intensifying in Zaidal and surrounding southern districts of Homs. A curfew has been imposed to prevent any gatherings or retaliatory actions.

Brigadier General Murhaf Al-Nassan, the head of internal security in Homs, stated that the “gruesome murder” and the evidence at the scene indicate a clear attempt “to provoke discord among the community.” He strongly urged citizens to avoid reactions and let security forces apprehend those responsible.

The Homs governorate convened an emergency meeting to bolster stability measures, while the Interior Ministry confirmed a full investigation is underway to track down the perpetrators. Officials have vowed to take a firm stand against what they describe as any effort to disrupt the region’s civil peace.
