DXB targets 100 million passengers as recovery accelerates

Dubai International Airport is aiming to reach the 100 million annual-passenger milestone in early 2027 as airline capacity returns and demand strengthens after months of disruption across regional aviation.
Dubai Airports chief executive Paul Griffiths expects passenger traffic at DXB to finish 2026 in the low-70-million range before accelerating towards the long-pursued 100 million mark. The timetable represents a shift from expectations at the start of the year, when the airport was forecast to handle about 99.5 million passengers during 2026.
The revision follows extraordinary disruption to Gulf aviation after regional conflict and airspace restrictions sharply reduced flights from late February. DXB handled 31.5 million passengers during the first half of 2026, down 31.3 per cent from 46 million in the corresponding period last year.
Signs of recovery became clearer through the second quarter. Passenger numbers rose from 3.5 million in April to 4.5 million in May and 5 million in June as airlines progressively restored services. DXB handled 13 million passengers during the quarter.
Griffiths expects the network recovery to continue through the remainder of the year, with the airport working towards restoration of a full schedule as international airlines return. Transfer passengers are particularly important to DXB because of its position as a hub connecting Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas.
The rebound is being supported by Emirates and flydubai, whose extensive networks make Dubai one of the world’s most important connecting points. Foreign airlines that reduced or suspended services during the regional disruption have also been rebuilding frequencies, although the pace has varied depending on security assessments and travel advisories.
By the end of June, almost 50 international airlines were operating at DXB, connecting the airport with 217 destinations in 99 countries. Passenger load factors were approaching levels recorded before the disruption, indicating that demand has been returning rapidly where seats become available.
Aircraft movements reached 150,600 during the first six months, 32.1 per cent below the same period of 2025. The second quarter accounted for 62,500 movements. Cargo traffic stood at 751,340 tonnes during the half year, down 28.7 per cent, illustrating the broader impact of reduced aviation capacity.
The decline contrasts sharply with DXB’s record performance in 2025. The airport handled 95.2 million passengers last year, up 3.1 per cent from 2024 and the highest annual total in its history. It also retained its position as the world’s busiest airport for international passenger traffic.
That performance had placed the 100 million threshold within immediate reach. Before the regional disruption, expectations for 2026 centred on approximately 99.5 million passengers, supported by growing traffic from established markets including India, Saudi Arabia and Britain and faster expansion from China and other international markets.
Dubai’s tourism expansion remains an important underlying driver. The emirate attracted about 19.6 million international overnight visitors in 2025, while aviation continues to support its strategy of expanding trade, tourism, financial services and international business.
Griffiths has pointed to strong fares and passenger demand as evidence that travellers remain willing to fly through Dubai. The principal constraint has increasingly been the availability of capacity rather than a collapse in appetite for travel. Higher frequencies and the return of international operators could therefore translate quickly into greater passenger volumes.
Operational performance has also remained strong despite the disruption. Nearly 99 per cent of departing passengers cleared passport control within 10 minutes during the first half, while a similar proportion of arriving passengers completed passport formalities within 15 minutes. More than 99 per cent passed security screening within five minutes.
