Diplomatic efforts intensify as Indian mission in Tehran arranges emergency food and water for crew of MT Valiant Roar, but access remains blocked weeks after detention.

NEW DELHI/ TEHRAN, January 18, 2026 — The Indian government is engaged in sustained diplomatic efforts to secure consular access to 16 Indian crew members detained aboard the merchant vessel MT Valiant Roar, which has been held by Iranian authorities since mid-December 2025.

In an official statement issued on Saturday, the Indian Embassy in Tehran disclosed that despite repeated high-level requests over the past month, Iranian officials have yet to grant permission for diplomats to meet the detained seafarers or allow them to contact their families in India.

“The request for consular access has been repeated numerous times since then, both by diplomatic correspondence and in-person meetings in Bandar Abbas and Tehran, including at the level of the Ambassador,” the embassy stated, noting that initial contact was made on December 14, 2025, immediately after learning of the detention.

While access remains a key diplomatic hurdle, Indian authorities have intervened to address urgent humanitarian needs. After being alerted to dwindling supplies onboard, the mission successfully coordinated with the Iranian navy in early January to arrange emergency deliveries of food and water. Efforts are also underway to ensure continued provisions of fuel.

Parallel to governmental action, the Consulate of India in Dubai is pressing the UAE-based owning company of the MT Valiant Roar to fulfill its responsibilities. Diplomatic channels are urging the company to provide regular provisions and secure legal representation for the crew, as the matter is expected to enter Iran’s judicial system.

“The Mission and the Consulate continue to press the Iranian authorities to grant early consular access to the crew, and to ensure expeditious completion of the judicial proceedings,” the embassy emphasized.

The incident underscores the complex challenges facing seafarers in international waters and highlights India’s proactive diplomatic approach to safeguarding its citizens abroad amid jurisdictional and procedural delays.
