The UAE has secured a position among the world’s top performers in project management, ranking eighth globally with 23,670 active Project Management Institute (PMI) certifications, according to newly released data.

The milestone reflects the country’s sustained investment in professional excellence and its reliance on structured project delivery to power some of the world’s most ambitious national initiatives.

Project management has become a defining pillar of the UAE’s economic model. The country’s rapid transition toward knowledge-based, innovation-driven growth has created heavy demand for professionals capable of steering complex projects across sectors such as aviation, tourism, real estate, advanced technology, green energy and digital infrastructure.

From the development of smart cities to nationwide renewable-energy programmes and multi-agency digital-transformation efforts, the UAE’s project landscape increasingly mirrors the scale and sophistication of leading global economies.

The latest PMI data underscores this momentum. The UAE now ranks eighth worldwide for the prestigious Project Management Professional (PMP) certification, considered the global gold standard for project leaders. It stands even higher in specialised streams: fourth globally for Risk Management Professional (PMI-RMP) and fifth for Scheduling Professional (PMI-SP) credentials.

These achievements highlight not only the depth of project capability within the country, but also its rising emphasis on advanced disciplines essential for modern mega-projects where predictive modelling, scenario planning and time-critical execution are indispensable.

Industry analysts note that this rise is closely tied to the UAE’s shift away from oil dependency and toward a diversified, future-ready economy. Flagship development strategies—such as UAE Vision 2031, Dubai’s Economic Agenda D33 and the nationwide Industry 4.0 programme—place structured project oversight at the centre of national progress. These agendas require leaders who can integrate technical, financial and strategic decision-making, prompting greater uptake of PMI’s most advanced qualifications.

Among these, the Program Management Professional (PgMP) and Portfolio Management Professional (PfMP) certifications are gaining significant traction as organisations seek executives capable of managing interconnected programmes and aligning investment portfolios with long-term national objectives.

PgMP-certified professionals are trained to coordinate multiple related projects to deliver combined business benefits, while PfMP-certified leaders are equipped to evaluate risk, prioritise investments and optimise the value of entire project portfolios. Their growing presence in the UAE reflects a shift toward more strategic, enterprise-level governance in both the public and private sectors.

The country’s commitment to building a world-class project management ecosystem extends beyond certification numbers. Government bodies, major corporations and industry groups continue to collaborate with PMI’s UAE Chapter and its network of authorised training partners to ensure that professionals stay aligned with emerging global standards. Continuous learning has become a core part of national workforce development, particularly as technologies such as artificial intelligence, advanced analytics and automation reshape the tools and techniques of project delivery.

While certification figures may fluctuate due to market cycles, the long-term trajectory points toward sustained expansion. Rising investment in giga-projects, sustainability-focused infrastructure, tourism diversification and digital government reinforces the need for skilled project teams capable of translating strategic ambitions into measurable outcomes. As neighbouring economies also accelerate their transformation agendas, the UAE’s established project management culture positions it as a regional benchmark and a global reference point.

The country’s ascent in global rankings ultimately reflects a broader national philosophy: that large-scale progress depends on disciplined execution, specialised expertise and a highly skilled workforce. By embedding project management excellence into the core of its development model, the UAE continues to strengthen its reputation as a country that envisions bold futures and also consistently delivers them.
